It was stupid. To think that a teenage girl could figure it out better than the adults. However, that wasn’t the case. “Well, you see, if they did suspect me, aren’t I in their territory? Meaning I could easily be outnumbered, hence why they wouldn’t make me as happy as Larry.” he had a point. Since he wasn’t in his own territory right now, the French could easily outnumber him, get him cornered and kill him without anyone noticing. They wouldn’t make him happy; they just wanted him to leave, as if only a glare could do that.
He shook his head, flabbergasted that she would assume that of him. Even though they didn’t know much about each other, still, to assume that he enjoyed people dying was odd. “Not at all. It just reminds me of the movies. Haven’t you ever wanted to be a spy or in some action paced adventure? I’ve always wanted to be the godfather, it would be interesting to do what he does,” it was a good thing this would never reach his boss, Ivan. What would he think if he heard Alek stating that he’d like to be the godfather? He might possibly think that Alek may be planning to undermine his position.
He chuckled at the questions. They were logical questions. “They do green roofs in large cities where there isn’t enough space to plant trees and flowers on the ground because of tall buildings. The plants on the roof are to help create oxygen and such in the city, fresh air type deal.” He had been a little worried about it when he first read about the topic. How could a tree grow on top of a building? But they were small trees that didn’t grow too big and other plants to help create oxygen in the city.
He wanted to turn the tables on her now. She had been astounded to think that he enjoyed hearing people were dead. Now it was her turn. “Are you saying that you’d enjoy people dying at your request?” he laughed. “It’s the same as what you asked me, you know.” he was referring to the fact that she thought he enjoyed hearing about people dying. He didn’t enjoy hearing about their deaths, he just had to listen to it sometimes.
“Wouldn’t it be easier to find a man and get settled down by going to college? There you would meet people with common interests and someone headed somewhere, instead of a deadbeat?” he had another point. Not just brainy people went to college. People who wanted to do something with their lives went to college to better the chances of doing something. She would most likely meet someone on the right path by going to college. “But is that what you want? To get settled and married? Because there are always loans you could apply for to pay for school yourself, if it’s the option you’d choose over marriage.” Alek couldn’t fathom the idea of marriage. It had been denied to him for so long, thanks to his gender choice, that he had never thought about wanting to get married. That was, until the state of New York declared that gay couples were able to get married. But even then, he couldn’t think about settling down.

Nicole listened to Alek's point on the subject and let it run through her mind a few times. “but do you see many French here. Besides, just because they're glaring doesn't mean they’re involved in the Mafia, they could be as helpless as ducklings for all you know” she didn't know anything about the politics, she hadn't even noticed anything strange about Alelk until now, but now even she was growing suspicious of Alex, he seemed to know a lot about it all. More than she would've expected. “don't you think, if they where 'mafia' and you had come somewhere your not welcome, you'd already be dead.”
Her comment about enjoying hearing about death appeared to have offended him, it wasn't her intention, she just asked a lot of questions about a lot of things. She would have to apologise. Then he spoke about movies, he wanted to be the godfather, she hadn't seen that one, it shall be added to her mental to watch list. Would she like to be in a movie? Maybe, but with a completely different context, generally people that kill people end up dead or in jail and she hoped neither one for her father. “I don't know. Not all movies end well. In all those drama's or whatever where they kill the bad guy or get them locked up, they make it so simple. What if the bad guy wasn't a bad person, just made bad choices. He probably had a family. Movies only show on side. So, I really don't know. I tend to just criticise, not imagine what ifs. Theres really no point, we are all stuck in our lives and its not changing any time soon, but it would be nice to learn some kinda cool fighting stuff, kick some ass. How fun would it be, living a little on the dangerous side, adrenaline can be good.” thinking about it, she'd hoped she hadn't said too much, she wasn't allowed to talk about it to anyone, and even her father wouldn't speak to her about anything. All she could do was let everything bottle up, it was probably why she couldn't keep friends, making them was easy. It was keeping them for longer than a year that was the challenge, they always seemed to know she was holding back.
Oh thank goodness, back onto the weird... what would she call them? Like mini building plantations or something. She'd stick to what he called them, green roofs. “oh, well it sounds like an ok idea, I guess. I'd just hate to be living or working on the floor directly beneath, id be scared a tree would fall through the roof, then you'd drown in dirt, being buried alive is certainly not on my to do list. But, I guess its kinda needed. Fresh air is important. But maybe they should just stop with the buildings, leave some room.” ok, she wasn't a tree hugger or anything, she just liked the occasional trip to the country, if everywhere where like the city, all the scenery would be ruined.
She should have expected Alek's next comment, yet it still shocked her, it was probably not something she could joke out of. Should she try? “everyone’s going to die at some point, and the sad truth is a huge percentage of us die at a young age, I could die tomorrow, you could die tomorrow, the bartender could die. But no, I don't enjoy death. It happens all too often, too many people die because of petty things. But some people still deserve it, and by saying that, o, I don't think anyone has the right to make a verdict on whether someone deserves to die.” she really had to shut her mouth, usually, her conversations didn't have such topics brought into them. You don't have to learn a lie about something never talked about. “and I'm Sorry if I'd have offended you, I said it wrong”
College was a very complicated topic, also was finding a man to marry, maybe not to a lot of people, but nothing was simple any more. “finding a man in college would be far from simple, it has to be someone that can be welcomed into my family, we are very close. Besides, I doubt my father would approve of anyone I met at college, he has his idea on the type of person I should marry. He wants me to marry someone who will take care of me. He thinks its a man's job, taking care of the family.” she thought hard on his next question. Was it something she really wanted? Or was it a way of getting away from what she currently knew. At this point, she didn't know the answer, there where downsides and upsides to both options. “maybe, I haven't decided whether or not its what I want yet. Its a lot of work, not sure if I'm ready for that kind of commitment yet. I'm having fun living life.”

Alek realised that he was speaking about the mafia far too much here. She would soon figure out that he was involved with the mafia if he didn’t stop speaking from experience. “You’re probably right. What would I know about the mafia anyways. Maybe he’s glaring at me because I’m talking to someone so attractive,” he could say that without lying. Even though he was interested in men, he knew when someone was attractive. She was very pretty, she had natural blonde hair which complimented her skin tone and beautiful green eyes. She didn’t appear to be too tall for a woman as some women who were too tall could be unattractive to some men. She also looked like the athletic type; her arms were decently muscled that he could tell she was into some form of sport. Even though he was interested in men, if he weren’t, she would probably be his type, a little too young for him, but definitely his type.
It wasn’t that he was offended by what Nikki had said, it was more that he was a little annoyed. She had judged him so quickly based on one simple statement that he found that type of news interesting. It was true, he hated that people had to die, but the way the mafia worked intrigued him even though he was a part of it. It would continue to interest him long after he left the mafia as well.
As they talked about movies, he had to consider what she had to say about the topic. It was true, not all movies had a happy ending. As she continued on about the bad guy in a movie, it almost sounded as if she were speaking from experience. Did she know someone who had gotten into trouble before? Maybe it was a sibling who had done something wrong and got caught. He wasn’t a bad person, he had just made bad choices. It made Alek think about what he did in the mafia. Was he a bad person then?
“Yea, living on the dangerous side is fun,” he looked around the room, glancing at everyone before leaning in a little closer before speaking, “The other day, I littered. I’m joking. No, living on the dangerous side could be fun, but it’s dangerous, keep that in mind.” He chuckled, finishing off his drink and signalling for another. It was something that he told Nikolai every time he asked about his work and what he’d done that day. He had to remind the nine year old that it was dangerous for him to know and that he shouldn’t ask.
He laughed this time, trying to make it a small chortle instead of laughing out loud. She might think that he was laughing at her. “I guess that would be a worry for anyone right under the roof, never thought about that,” she was full of insight that he hadn’t ever considered before. This conversation was proving to be more of a relaxing thing than it had started out to be. Now that he was feeling relaxed from his long day, it was nice to just sit here and have a conversation.
She spoke about how everyone had to die at some point and how he or she could all die tomorrow. For him, that was a more likely chance than for her. At least she believed that no one should be able to decide who lives and who dies. “Does that apply to criminals put to death row?” it wasn’t something he exactly wanted to talk about but it was a subject that came with the topic. “You didn’t offend me, I was just a little weird about it.”
Alek wished that he had gone to college. Finding a man would have been easy for him. It was simple really. He didn’t have any expectations being placed on his partner as Nikki had. Her father expected a certain type of man to come along and strike Nikki’s fancy. He wanted a man that would be able to take care of her the way that he did, possibly someone being as protective over her as he was. “In the end, your father will come to realise that the right man, is one that makes you happy, not him.” it was what he told himself every time his uncle had commented on his gender preference. He was always after him that he should like the opposite gender, start a family, live life. But he was living his life the way that made him happy. So what if he hadn’t settled down yet, he could still have a family with another man.
“Well you have tons of time to figure it out. You don’t mind if I smoke, do you? It’s my bad habit,” he gave her a sheepish smile, pulling the pack of cigarettes out of his inside pocket along with his lighter. Placing the cigarette in his fingers and up to his lips, he flicked the lighter on and lit up. Taking in a deep breath of the smoke and nicotine, he let it out in a puff of smoke, making sure not to blow it in Nikki’s direction.

Attractive? Alek's comment made Nicole softly laugh, she never wore much make up, it took too long to do and she'd grown lazy. Besides, she was mostly happy with her appearance, and what she wasn't happy about, make up wasn't going to fix. “well thanks, your not so bad yourself. And as for your comment about what would you know? I think you know a lot. You've already showed a fair bit of knowledge” she knew there had to be more to it, no one she'd spoken to knew as much as him, he hadn't completely given it away, so she could be wrong, unless she was seeing what wasn't there. Maybe she was wanting excitement a little to much, creating it in her head. Perhaps the following night she'd go to someone else's 'territory', or whatever they called it. Probably not, excitement was one thing, but shouldn't be taken too far.
Living on the dangerous side, fun? It sounded like he had some experience, she wondered what it was. Had he been to jail? A lot of people she knew had been to jail, then again, if that where the case, it was highly doubted he'd find it fun. As he leaned in Nicole listened and couldn't stop her short burst of laughter, containing herself wasn't easy, but not being able to hold in her, rather loud outburst was embarrassing, thank goodness she wasn't taking a mouthful of her drink, spitting coke in someone's face, was not nice, and in the past, landed her in a fight, which of course, she lost.”oops, that was louder than id expected. And isn't the whole point of danger, that its.... dangerous?” at least she'd managed to collect herself, she had moments in the past where she couldn't, was stuck in a laughing fit and unable to talk understandably. Those moments, greatly embarrassing and she hoped to never have one again.
“would they sue? Who's fault would it be? Not that a dead person can take anyone to court anyway. But still. And can people access the roof, its nice sitting under a tree and reading a book.” it was probably one of the best things about vacations to the country, catching up on her reading, it had been a while since she picked up a book, maybe instead of all her night outs, she should stay in bed with a good book. Or go find a park and read. Not likely to happen, but it could be an idea just in case. “do you have any new projects you'll be starting? Or do you have a break between them?” Nicole knew she sounded nosy, but it was her thing, she was like a toddler, they ask a lot of questions too.
Alek asked about death row, the people put on it where there for a reason, their crimes where awful, and most took pride in it. How wrong was that, people showing pride over crimes they'd committed, the perfect murder, sure it was hard, it had to be perfected unless you wanted to be caught. But to be proud? In a way, she kind of understood, but it still kind of shocked her. “yes, death row should be banned, its someone deciding someone is to die. It's different. The person can't fight for their life, they're locked up. murder is different. If you kill someone, that person has the chance to fight for their lives, if they die, they just weren't strong enough and it was obviously their time, even if you sneak up on the person, then, they're instinct simply failed them, if they had better instincts, they'd stand a chance... if that makes sense.” She was glad she hadn't offended him, sometimes she was quick to judge, something she'd have to work on. Nicole didn't want to continue her judgement, and she felt a small smile and nod would do the trick.
“yea, I guess, he says he wants me to be happy. Maybe it's my fault, when I was a little younger my main goal was to be with a high profile gangster, kinda lame. But I think it made him a little paranoid.” it was true, she had that goal, maybe it still was one of her goals, maybe not. At least her father might be somewhat happy about it, or not. Who knew, who cared.
Nicole raised her eyebrow as Alek asked if shed mind if he lit a smoke. “go for it, I'm used to it.” for some reason, she hadn't picked him as a smoker, looks really could be deceiving. She watched him take the first drag and smiled, it was such a strange habit, why would someone do it? Didn't they taste bad?

He chuckled, trying to play off her comment about how much he knew. He wasn’t focused on the return compliment that she had given him, it wasn’t important right now. Was she catching onto him? She couldn’t have figured out the real reason or the glares or his extensive knowledge. “Well like I said, this interests me. I’ve read many spy novels, mafia books, even historical ones. The best to read are about the early 1920’s, there was a lot going on in this city then.” Play it off, make it look like he’s some kind of fanatic. That was the best way to get her off his trail. “And thank you,” now he would address the compliment paid in return.
As she laughed out loud, Alek couldn’t help but grin at Nikki. What was he supposed to say. That the other day he was ordered to hunt someone down and bring him to Ivan, the boss of the Russian mafia? No, of course not, so what was the best thing to break the ice and get her off his trail, littering. “I’ll have you know that littering is a big deal with global warming. Some would say it’s a crime.” his grin widened before he cleared his throat. “You’re right though, maybe we should both live a little more dangerous lives.”
He was astounded by how many questions she asked in a row. She had a lot of questions about this. Most of which, he wasn’t sure of the answer. “I’m not sure, to be honest, it’s never happened before, so no one’s ever sued. And yes, they can access the roof. We made it a nice cafe styled location for employees to take breaks,” he didn’t know how much longer he could keep this up. Lying was easy for him, what with his occupation and all, but it was tiring as well. The bigger the lie, the easier to be caught in it. “We’re about to start working on a new project with a pharmaceutical company. Not sure what the details are about it yet I’m afraid,” there, another easy lie. Hopefully, she wouldn’t ask how he wouldn’t know any details about the project yet.
He thought about her answer to his death row question. It was a valid reason, although not one he agreed with completely. “That makes sense. However, what are we supposed to do with serial killers? I believe in death row because they’ve taken so many lives. They choose who they were going to kill and decided that they were possibly going to die. Besides, that would take a lot of taxpayer’s dollars to house all those criminals,” even though he was a criminal himself, he still saw death row as valid. It was right that they should lose their life while they took so many.
“You, a gangster? I can’t see it. What made you decide to want to be a gangster?” maybe this was where he would find out that his assumptions before were right and Nikki was the daughter of a mob boss. “Thanks” that first drag of nicotine felt good. Although cigarettes could kill, Aleksandr believed that the chances of him dying from smoking, were the same chances he took every time he went under cover.
“So, what do you do all day without a job or school?”

Nicole listened to Alek's reasoning for knowing so much about the Mafia. It made sense, you could learn a lot from books, maybe she was wrong. She'd never know, either he really didn't know, or he wasn't letting on to anything, at the end of the day, it was entirely his choice. It was kind of dissapointing, she'd kind of hoped he was involved, definitely someone from a different... what would she call them? Teams? No, that sounded like a child's game. Well, someone that her dad would get angry about, if he ever found out. Kind of like a rebellion on her part, being the perfect daughter was getting tiring, and it could be payback for having someone follow her for ages. Protection was one thing, but what she had, if he wasn't family, she'd be getting a restraining order. “why does the Mafia interest you so much? Its not that great.” Maybe he just liked all the drama involved, reading about someone dying was different than someone you know dying, everyone loved watching movies where people died. In a way, it was sick. But, humans are strange creatures, the way they think and act, there where a lot of questions that would never be answered.
Oh, global warning, a subject that could turn political, very fast. Of course, she wouldn't start the political debate, if neither one did, it would just be global warming, not all the other mumbo jumbo. They where both adults, her barely, but still able to keep the conversation pleasant, someone a lot younger than herself should be able to do that, its not like its challenging, unless of course the person your talking to is trying to start a drama, then the best option is to simply walk away. “don't forget littering also makes the area look unclean, and kills of the animals. And yes, I plan on adding a bit of danger to my life, I haven’t had a thrill or scare for a while.”
“hopefully no one ruins it, or chops the tree so it falls off the building down onto the road, that would be a small disaster. And they'd want to make sure no one gets thrown or trips over the edge either. I'm not sure about it, there seems like too many ways the roof trees could kill or hurt people. I certainly wouldn't feel safe up there. Too high” she would have to stop questioning him, it was like she was a cop. Maybe she could be a lawyer, wasn't there job practically talking? On all the shows all they did was talk, wonder how long it would take to get qualified. Pharmaceutical company for his next job, but not know what they want done? That was a little odd, she'd want all the details before agreeing to do a job. “why would you take a job that you don't know the details for?” she didn't want to ask another question, but it was completely valid. What if what they wanted done wasn't possible?
Alek's view on death row was different to hers, not unexpected, his view made sense as well, it did cost less, and ensured there was always room for criminals to be locked up, but still. “i do see your point, but for some, death is too easy. They should pay for their crimes, not be let off the hook like that. Just, have a lot of beds to one cell, 3 meals a day, if they kill each other off, so be it. They made their choices and dug their own graves.” she didn't mean to sound slightly cold, or talk about them like they aren't human, it was just how she'd grown up, her mother had the same views as she. And probably passed them down to her accidently through conversation. Or it was from what she'd heard at small parties at her house. Even though her view was different to a lot of others, she'd still respect everyone else’s, after all, she wanted them to respect hers, it does go both ways
she smiled at his question, her a gangster would be quite funny, she could picture it, it was enough to turn her small smile into a grin. “not be a gangster, date one. If I became a gangster, I'd surely die within the first few hours, the last fight I got in, I got beaten, He kicked my ass in minutes. Its barely even worth calling a fight” she'd never forget that night, it had started off as a shouting match between herself and a drunk brunette over a bump on the dance floor, it was all fine and Nicole was ready to walk away before the brunette's boyfriend decided to get involved, there was no chance of her winning against a guy, she was a girl, sure, she worked out, but she didn't have a clue how to fight, still doesnt. She was sore for days afterwards, as if she'd ever forget it. A lesson worth remembering.
He wanted to know about what she did with her spare time, wow, she was pretty boring, but he asked, so, she would bore. “well, everyday I have lunch with my mother, my father joins if he has the time. I jog a lot, go swimming, shopping, or just looking at stores, hang out with friends. Clean my house. I'm very boring. What about you, how do you pass time?”

It was a good question. He’d just made her believe that he was a fanatic about anything mafia related. Making her believe he was a fanatic was easy. Now came the hard part. Why did the mafia interest him so much? The real answer was because he was in the mafia; he had to take an interest in it. However, he couldn’t tell her that. “You’re right, it isn’t that great. You’re always hearing about gang wars, territory battles, people dying, and more. But why I’m interested is for the spy bit. There aren’t any real spy agencies around, not like in the movies. And being a spy for the mafia would be interesting as well as dangerous. That’s part of the reason it interests me,” not to mention he already was a spy for the mafia. Seriously, there was a lot he had to refrain from telling Nikki. It almost made him feel bad, almost.
“So, what kind of dangerous acts are you going to add to your life? Drunk driving? Standing in front of trains? Go to a shooting range?” he inhaled deeply from the cigarette, holding it in for a few brief moments before blowing the smoke out in rings. The rings weren’t perfect by any means but that was why he was practicing. He also made sure not to blow any of the smoke in her direction.
He couldn’t help but chuckle as she continued on about the green roofs. She seemed a little too worried about the plants on the roof than she should be. The chances of her encountering one such building were slim. “You’re afraid of heights?” by her ‘too high’ comment, Alek had to consider whether she was afraid of heights. Maybe that was a way that she could add some adrenaline to her life, by chasing her fears, that is, if she was actually afraid of heights. Alek wasn’t afraid of heights though. His parents had jumped out of planes for jobs when they were still alive. He’d done it once, just to see what it was like. Although he wasn’t afraid of heights, he’d never do it again.
And she had to ask him that question. Of course she would ask, only someone who wasn’t paying attention to their conversation would miss the chance to ask. “Well, I’m just a minor architect. I’m not the lead on the project. So I don’t know much about the job until I’m briefed the next time I head into work. But the lead of this project knows what’s going on, he has to before he would ever accept a job.” hopefully that was a good enough answer for her. She was very curious about things, always asking questions. There was nothing wrong with being curious; however, she always seemed to ask the questions that could catch him in his lie. He would need to answer any more questions carefully from here on out.
So she was still adamant about criminals not being put to death row. He didn’t expect her to change her view on a few simple sentences from him, but at least she was considering his point on the topic. “I wouldn’t say let them kill each other off, more like we need underground jailhouses so that we can house more per room, instead of cramming them all into tinier rooms.” he knew enough about architecture to know that if someone could build underground bunkers for warheads, then they could build underground jailhouses.
Oh, so she wanted to date a gangster, not be one. It would have been funny if she’d wanted to be a gangster. He could imagine it now, her asking twenty questions during a debriefing. The other bosses getting angry with her constant questions. No, she couldn’t be a gangster. Although, the reason that she believed she couldn’t be a gangster was completely different from his. “What was the fight started over?” Alek was a little shocked to hear that a man had ‘kicked her ass’. Didn’t men believe in not hitting girls?
Her life sounded normal. Something that Alek wasn’t able to have. He wasn’t able to have a normal life since he was in the mafia. “I read, see to my godson Nick, go to work, go to clubs and bars, the usual.” Nikki asked a lot of questions, so the next thing he expected her to ask would be about Nikolai. Of course, he would just call him Nick in front of her but that was okay.

So it was the whole spy idea that intrigued him, interesting. She hadn't asked her father about how that worked, surprisingly, she asked questions about everything else. But, wouldn't being a spy, be quite boring, just watching people. Unless they did more than just watch. The spies her dad had sent to follow her just watched, but maybe others killed. She'd have to watch more movies. “then why don't you just join? Start at the bottom. Work you way up. Its not that hard.” Nicole shrugged. “then you won't have to bother with the movies about it.” Probably not the best advice to give anyone, but it was words without thinking. Also not a good idea. Oh well, she could get away with it, no one ever suspected she was in any way involved, not even by family ties, besides, lying was getting old, she'd always had pride in her honesty, and all these lies was making her feel quite guilty, not to mention, she'd already forgotten the small string of lies. Never mind.
Hmm, her dangerous acts. She'd written a list during one of her boring nights, a lot of it just silly stuff. But some she really wanted to do, of course, there was a few she'd never even think of doing. Cliff diving for example. There was no way, for any reason, anyone would ever be able to convince her to throw herself off a cliff. “I actually have a stupid list, boredom does strange stuff. But I have ideas. The Shooting range sounds fun, always wanted to shoot a gun. It would be a blast. And other stuff like, conquer my fears, explore different Mafia territories, share a secret, which might sound lame. But its complicated. And learn to fight. I'm definitely going to do all of them.” Right now, Nicole didn't really care if Alek would judge her, he'd asked the question, all she did was answer truthfully. “what about you? You must have some ideas”
Of course she had a fear of heights, it was unnatural in so many ways for humans to deal with it, if they where meant to be up there, they would have wings, did they? No, which meant, a humans feet are meant to be planted firmly on the ground. Of course, she did want to confront her fears, and heights was a huge one. Maybe she could do it last? Start with small fears first. Nicole was a little embarrassed to admit her fear, most people she told, laughed at her. Her Ex had even carried her to a cliff edge to try and force her to confront her fear. Worst date she'd ever been on. Instead of actually admitting to it, Nicole gave Alek a small smile followed with a nod. It was all he'd get on that.
He spoke about his job, it sounded, interesting. Not knowing what the next job would be, she imagined, could get quite annoying after a while. “have you thought about stealing his job, becoming the lead?” wow, she hadn't realised how bitchy that sounded until she said it out loud. That wasn't the impression she wanted to give him. Well, she couldn't take it back, Maybe he'd just see it as... career focused? Ambitious maybe?
Underground Jail houses sounded like an alright idea, she didn't really have much to say on the topic, it was a subject she didn't like to think about much. Maybe it was worry about if her dad ever got caught, she didn't like such thoughts. Jail sounded like such a harsh place, somewhere she never wanted to visit, for any reason. “underground would work. They should probably grow some brains and do it”
Nicole smiled at Alek's question, how the fight started, it was so petty, she found it funny herself, well the reason it started, the fight itself was in no way funny, maybe if it hadn't have been so painful, she could of looked back and laughed at the stupidity, but as it was, no. “well, she wanted my seat. Me and her didn't get along anyway, I dated him first, then after we broke up, she started dating him. And he used to always pick fights with me. I was gonna walk away, but she got her boyfriend, my ex involved by telling him I called him some name, can't even remember what it was. He just wanted to act tough, one of those small time gangsters.”
His life sounded quite nice, he had a godson, she wondered how old he was. “how old is your godson?” Alek was the clubbing type? She couldn't picture it. Dancing was a lot of fun. If Alek went out a lot, maybe he'd know somewhere that was actually alive. Could work. “then do you wanna go somewhere else? This place is kinda dead. And don't worry, this is not me trying to hit on you. “
ooc- you comment about her asking the gang bosses alot of questions made me laugh lol

He was startled, as she asked why he didn’t just join the mafia. As if that was a good suggestion for someone of her age to make. He couldn’t see her reasoning for telling him to join the mafia. Of course, he was a spy for the Russian mafia, and an underboss too. However, for her to suggest that he just join was somewhat of a shock to him. “Join the mafia? Do you know how dangerous that could be? Besides, I have a decent job where I am, and I think I like the idea of being a spy much more than the thought of actually doing it,” although it was another lie, he wasn’t lying about his current job. His job was decent where he was. The only thing is, she thinks it’s at an architectural firm where he knows it’s really with the mafia.
He listened, smiling at some of the things on her list of dangerous acts. He wanted to know how big a secret she had for it to be placed on her dangerous acts list. “It doesn’t sound lame. It must be some secret.” he smiled to her, taking another drag from his cigarette before tapping the end in an ashtray before taking another smaller drag of the nicotine. Nikki asked him what would be on his list of dangerous acts and he had to think hard about this. Being in the mafia was definitely the most dangerous thing on his list but he couldn’t tell her that. “I’m not sure. Learning how to shoot would probably be on my list as well. Maybe learning how to fight, go sky diving or parasailing, and possibly join the mafia,” he gave her an eye roll to the last item on his list, grinning right after it. Most of the items on his list he’d already done but she didn’t need to know that.
He chuckled as she spoke next, realising that she sounded a little high maintenance there. “I’m happy where I am. I do a lot of work where I am, but not nearly as much as the lead. I think I might not be able to handle the lead’s position. If anything goes wrong, the lead gets the blame, not sure I could handle that.” Alek was afraid to make mistakes. That was one of the reasons he was at a French bar tonight, since he had been caught sleeping during the boss meeting. It was the one thing he had told her so far that was the complete truth. He didn’t think he would ever be able to handle the lead position, he quite enjoyed following.
As he listened to how the fight started, he agreed that it was pretty petty a reason to start a fight. “Still, even calling him whatever the name was, you would think that he wouldn’t beat up a girl for it. He should have more pride than that.” even though he didn’t know her too well yet and they had just met, he was glad that she wasn’t dating this ‘small time gangster’ any more. It was bad to date an idiot since it made the other partner look like an idiot as well. And Nikki wasn’t an idiot, she was rather insightful.
“He’s nine. Parents died in a car accident,” it wasn’t a lie, Nikolai’s parents did die in a car accident. The only difference is she would probably think of drunk driving where the truth was the car exploded due to a car bomb during turf wars. He chuckled, putting out his cigarette in the ashtray before looking up at her again, a smirk on his face. “Don’t worry, you’re a little too young for me anyways. Sure, not sure where would be good in this territory. I actually live in a different part of town, so,” and by different part of town he was of course referring to the Russian territory.

It was a mistake suggesting to Alek that he should join the mafia, it was advice that shouldn't be given to anyone. Only someone stupid would actually do it. Pity, it would've been nice to have someone she could talk openly to about it, then again, she'd been told not to put too much trust in people she'd just met. It was hard, Nikki wanted to trust people, she always tried to see the good in everyone, even though, sometimes it proved to be quite the challenge. Yes, it was dangerous. Once involved, everyday was dangerous. But it wasn't dangerous for her, right? She was just a daughter, who would want to hurt her? “yea, I guess it would be dangerous. But you'd get an adrenaline rush.” she wondered if he knew about what was happening, she was sure a lot of people did, there was no way everyone was oblivious to what was happening around them. Humans where to curious to not at least try and find out.
He claimed to not see her dangerous act lame. For a moment she felt like blurting out, just so it wasn't bottled up any more, but she knew she couldn't, there was no way he'd understand. In fact, she imagined him out the door in a flash. Besides, if he knew, it could get him hurt, something she didn't want, he seemed nice. “I guess it depends how you look at it, its this family thing, and certain others. But it makes me lie a lot, which is frustrating, I hate lying, and anyone who does lie. So I guess it also makes me a hypocrite.” now that she'd admitted to lying a lot, would Alek know she'd lied to him? The last comment was probably a mistake, admitting to it wasn't her intention, maybe she just couldn't bottle it any more. Not a good time to let her guard drop, she'd have to watch what she said from now on. He spoke about his dangerous to-do list, sky diving sounded awful scary, he was game if he was considering doing it. So much could go wrong, it was rare, yes, but not impossible. “that sounds quite scary, not sure if I'd have the guts for sky diving. Ever.”
Nikki knew her comment about stealing some ones job sounded quite bad, she couldn't help it, it was something her dad had taught her. Not to let anyone stand in the way of what you want, and to do everything you have to, to get it, even if it meant someone got hurt. She tried to be a good person, kind, caring, compassionate, but was she really a good person? Or was she someone that had to force it, or fake it? “I guess that would be annoying, getting the blame for everything.” She didn't want to comment too much on his statement considering what she'd said in the first place. It ashamed her that it had even crossed her mind. Was she turning into a cold person? She'd have to stop it, maybe start ignoring some of her fathers lessons, he made bad choices.
Alek was right about calling her ex a name should not have been enough to start a fight, it still did. She didn't know what she saw in him, maybe she'd hoped he would advance in status. But no, he stayed near the bottom. Maybe it was the fact the only fights he could win where against girls, which was kinda sad. “yea, he had a huge temper, the smallest things set him off, I think he was very insecure.” why did she have such bad taste in men, anyone she grew a crush on, should probably feel insulted. One day she'd meet someone nice. Hopefully. Or, more likely, she'd date someone just like her ex.
Hearing about Aleks godson made Nikki feel bad for the little guy, nine years and lost his parents, that's gotta be hard. “how does he cope?” she didn't want to ask too many questions on the subject, figured it was something personal, but she wanted to understand, it was hard to get her head around, she couldn't imagine losing her parents. Alek finished his cigarette, it didn't take as long as she guessed it would have, and she hadn't noticed him coughing, the only smoker she knew coughed ever five minutes, and always had an odd smell. What part of town was Alek from? Didn't really matter. “honestly, I don't really care what territory we go to. What's the worst that could happen?”

He couldn’t help but chuckle again as she mentioned the adrenaline rush that he would get from working in the mafia. He already knew what that adrenaline rush felt like since he felt it every time he was on a mission. “Yea, maybe not the right kind of adrenaline rush for me though,” he was suggesting that the mafia, although something he found interesting, wasn’t the right job for him. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Nikki hated people that lie including herself because she had to lie about things as well. He wondered how she would feel if she were to find out that, he was in the mafia already. He wouldn’t be telling her that any time today or ever, but if she ever found out, how would she react? “Not a big hypocrite. But everyone has to lie sometimes. Would you like to be told things the blunt way that might hurt your feelings or the gentle way with a very little white lie?” he would prefer that someone tell him something possibly painful with a white lie. He hated having his feelings hurt for no reason. And people that are blunt and always tell the truth annoy him.
If only she knew that he’d already tried skydiving. “Yea maybe a little scary, but this is our dangerous list, isn’t it?” he grinned at her, pulling his empty glass over and motioning for another refill. It was always good to wash down the taste of nicotine with some straight vodka.
“Yea, it would be. Imagine you’re in the middle of constructing a building and someone calls to tell you that the toilets your client ordered specifically, arrived, but they’re the wrong ones and the plumbers will only be on site for two hours, tops, and it’s not enough time to get the right toilets. Who gets blamed, the leader of the project,” his parents had had something similar happen to them once. They were on a mission to assassinate someone back in Russia. However, after the act was done, they had found out that they had been sent the wrong target and then a huge political uproar happened because of it. They were in hot water for a long time, with their boss getting the most of the steam.
Hearing about her ex’s temper made him snort. “Doesn’t he know that the best gangsters should have a good poker face?” After his comment, he gave her his best convincing smile before sipping his vodka again. At the comment about his insecurities, Alek placed his glass down, clearing his throat before continuing. “You can never have insecurities in the mafia. Can you imagine what the godfather would have been like with insecurities?” he was resorting back to his movie fanatic angle again. God, lying to her felt horrible, but it was so easy to do. He hoped that she would never find out the truth.
Their conversation had turned a little sour as Alek had mentioned Nikolai. He hadn’t meant to slow down their conversation to almost a standstill. However, there was nothing he could do about it now. “Well, sad to say I work a lot, so I’m not really home that often. But he seems to be coping pretty well. He understands what happened to them and that they can’t come back, I believe it’s best that he realise now that he can’t childishly wish for them to come back. If you know what I mean.” it was harder for children who couldn’t let go of what happens when their parents die. It wasn’t that Alek was cold hearted or anything, he just felt it was better for Nikolai to grow up understanding that his parents couldn’t come back. It wouldn’t be a disillusion for him when he came to the age when he met a crisis where he needed his parents. “I try my best, but sometimes it’s not good enough.” he swirled his drink around his glass a bit, staring down at the clear liquid.
He had been smoking ever since he was younger; before high school even. He would probably die of lung cancer or something from his cigarettes. But he only smoked twice a day unless it was poker night with the bosses. He didn’t cough all that often unless he accidentally choked on the smoke or his drink afterward.
So she didn’t care what territory they went to, as long as it was active and lively. “Well, I’m not too clear on the boundaries of the territories but I know of a few places, if you want to take your pick.” another small lie. He knew every territory boundary there was and ones that were constantly changing as well. He wasn’t even allowed in certain territories thanks to the leak in their faculty names and listings. “We have, a club, dance club, poetry club, or a theatre. Although, the theatre is usually filled with many heavy smokers.”

There was a wrong kind of adrenaline? Well, that kind was wrong for anybody. Nikki had always assumed it was all the same, obviously not, or maybe Alex just viewed it differently. Not something she could answer herself, all she'd be doing is assuming and she was done doing that. Hopefully. Nikki didn't have many adrenaline rushes, she would like to have more, but her life at the moment. Pretty dull. Nothing crazy happening. She stayed within her comfort zone, and felt safe. Her life. Dull, but pretty good, no ones life was perfect, and if they say it is they're in denial. “there’s a wrong kind of rush? Isn't it all the same?” someone should attempt to shut the mafia down, if no one joined, they wouldn't have followers, she was almost certain that if no one joined, that there wouldn't be a mafia. Then there wouldn't be as many deaths.
Alek's reasoning for small lies made sense. An old friend had been honest to her once about sleeping with her boyfriend. She was heartbroken, maybe at that time a small lie would have been better, she already knew the guy was cheating, but to find out it was her best friend at the time, it really was a lot to take in. “i guess your right. A lot of people lie to me. It sucks, but I have a bad habit of when people tell me something I don't want to hear. I sometimes lash out, like stabbing an old friend with a fork at a restaurant.” she thought about it, maybe she had overreacted at that time, but being told her boyfriend was cheating over lunch had made her mad. Still, Lying was something she wasn't about to change her opinion about any time soon.
Nikki softly laughed at Alek's comment, it was true, a dangerous list was meant to be scary, best way to get adrenaline pumping was to get scared. “so true. But theres no way it's going on my list. I don't want anything that scary.”
hearing Alek talk about toilets made Nikki laugh again, but not her normal quiet laugh, this laugh was rather loud. She couldn't picture anyone being too angry about getting the wrong toilet, they all did the same thing, but, it did make his point even if it was a strange mistake to get in trouble for. Maybe that was the reason for her small laughing outburst. After a minute of hiding behind her hands, Nikki took a deep breath. “Toilets? You decided to make your point with toilets? But I do see what you mean, not something i'd like to deal with either. I'm quite happy being a sheep” now she was slightly embarrassed, one for her laughing moment, and two for doing it hiding behind her hands, a habit she couldn't seem to break. Hating her laugh didn't help any either, she couldn't say why she hated it, but she did, it was why she usually contained herself to a softer, quiet laugh. That wasn't as embarrassing.
Nikki shrugged at Alek's comment about gangsters having a poker face, her ex certainly didn't have it, she doubted he'd even heard of a poker face. It didn't really matter, she didn't care what happened to him now, adnd last she heard, he got busted an was locked up. “I don't think he got that memo.” she watched as he sipped his vodka, did it burn? Maybe it was why he was sipping it, she couldn't imagine a mouthful would be very pleasant at all. Alek continued speaking about that movie he liked, the godfather. It was hard to compare having not seen the movie. But, didn't everyone have some insecurities?
It made Nikki a little sad hearing about nick, Alek's godson. In a way, she was glad to hear that he was coping well, in his circumstances not many people would be coping. Losing family or friends was always hard, it didn't matter how old you where, it breaks your heart. “its good he understands, it will make It easier on him.” she had known what he meant about childishly wanting them back, the longer he thought about the what ifs and wanting them back, the longer it would take him to deal with the pain and he couldn't move forward until he learnt how to deal with it. Life was cruel, it always found a way to kick you while you where down, or sometimes while you where trying to get up, probably laughing at you in the process. She watched Alek swirl his drink around his glass after saying that his best wasn't good enough, which, she didn't think was true. “your best is. You can't do any better than it.”
At least one of them knew a few places, the only place she knew was certainly not an option, she'd seen people there before that have regular contact with her father. She wasn't ready to be busted yet, life was too good to be cooped up in a house, which would be what happened if her dad found out about her 'night life'. It wasn't like anyone was getting hurt, and she wasn't putting herself in danger. She didn't hang out with people in the Mafia, ever. It wasn't her style. She listened to the options and thought for a few moments. “i don't know, you have to enjoy where your going too. Its not just me here. Something with upbeat music, dancing is a lot of fun.” she certainly wasn't lying there, Dancing was relaxing, in its own way. Most nights, she'd find a young man around her age she could dance with, she never went home with them, it was just a little bit of harmless fun. If she had to, she'd dance alone, it didn't really bother her, it was still fun, and wasn't that the whole point of it, to have fun?

Of course there was a wrong kind of rush. But maybe he hadn’t explained that right. There were different types of rushes. “Well, there are two different kinds of rushes. The kind of rush you get when you’re doing something bad, and the adrenaline rush which you can get any time. I think I’ll stick to the adrenaline rush instead of doing bad stuff. I guess the only difference is why you’re feeling a rush.” he chuckled, drinking more of his vodka.
Alek stared at her, giving her a ‘you did what now’ look. She really stabbed a friend with a fork? “Why would you stab a good friend with a fork? What could she have said to make you so . . . angry?” It was true that he sometimes didn’t like what he was hearing and wanted to do something to make up for it. Possibly stabbing someone with a fork, should one be nearby. However, he’d never done it before. Of course, that didn’t count for what he’d been told to do and wanted to do for the mafia.
“If that’s too scary to go on your list, you should at least add something like climbing a mountain or scaling a real rock wall or something. You never know, you might like it afterwards. Plus, it would make your father go crazy to know what you were doing.” she seemed like the type to enjoy annoying her father. Getting him worked up was something that she could enjoy.
He watched as she hid behind her hands, laughing loudly at his example. The bartender wasn’t really glaring at them anymore. He was just glancing in their direction every few minutes. What was his beef anyways? As soon as she started talking, he looked back at Nikki, chuckling at his example as well. “It was the only thing I could think of.” he took another sip of his drink, setting the glass down before speaking again. “Why would you want to be a sheep? That’s not fun at all,” being a sheep meant that she would listen to what her father told her to do, which she wasn’t doing right now. Being a sheep meant that she did what other people did just to fit in. She didn’t seem like the sheep type to him.
As Alek drank his vodka, he kind of missed the initial burn to the drink. He’d been drinking it for so long that it didn’t burn as badly as when he first tried the alcoholic beverage.
Nikki seemed to sympathize with Nick’s problem. As she reassured him that his best was good enough, he couldn’t hold back a small scoff. “I’m always working. He’s home alone most of the time. Shouldn’t I be there with him, working less, something?” He didn’t expect her to have the answer to these questions. She wasn’t a mother and didn’t have children. She wouldn’t know what he should be doing. But she could try to help him out.
So she wanted to go to the dance club. “I warn you now, I’m not a very good dancer,” that was practically the truth. Alek didn’t have a sense of rhythm. Of course, he knew technical dancing, he’d learned how to salsa and dances like that, but he wasn’t very good at just moving to the beat of the music. Or being original in his movements either.

Nikki listened as Alek explained the different rushes, they still sounded the same to her, although, she wasn't very intelligent. She was really getting good at embarrassing herself, now, if only there was a way to make money doing it. “i don't know, they still sound like the same rush to me.” it was probably really basic, only complicated in her own mind, or maybe she just had a different point of view on the subject. They'd probably never know, which wasn't so bad. In case she was wrong, the most likely outcome.
Alek's Question should have been expected, maybe she should have explained when telling him what she'd done, but, she probably shouldn't have told him at all. “well, one, she's no longer a good friend, but I stabbed her because, she invited me out for lunch, then while we where eating told me she was sleeping with my boyfriend and I happened to be holding a fork when she told me. I probably could've handled it better.” Nikki shrugged. She didn't regret it, if she could go back, she'd do it all over again, overreaction or not. A lot of people thought Nikki had a temper, surprisingly, considering she couldn't fight, it wasn't the first time she'd stabbed someone, it was the first time she'd used a fork though.
Was he being serious? Did he actually think that she'd risk climbing anything. Although, he had a point about making her dad crazy. But there where safer ways to do that, like, partying, dancing with strange guys, crossing into other territories, none of them where as scary as climbing a wall. “um, no, there’s no way I could do any of that, I freeze up and can't move. Then embarrass myself by being stuck. Ill just pretend I’m doing it” if only she wasn't scared of heights, her friends had taken some amazing scenery pictures while out and she loved recording all her memories, she never said no to having her picture taken.
She would have to learn how to contain that horrid laugh before anyone else heard it, at least Alek didn't appear to laugh at her. Nikki ran her fingers through her hair, getting rid of any knots that had formed during the night, after she was happy, she fixed her fringe then relaxed back into her chair. “well It did make your point” She smiled as Alek asked his next question. “well, some people call me a sheep. Among other things, so I figure they're right.” the subject wasn't her favourite, she didn't know what some peoples problems where, but they really seemed to dislike her, which was ok, she didn't need everyone to like her, she just wished they'd keep they're mouths shut.
Alek seemed to really care about his godson, at least the little guy had someone like that in his life. She considered what Alek said, it wasn't a subject she had a lot of experience in, well, any for that matter and in a way, she was glad for that. “well, if your not working how are you going to raise him, you won't be able to financially support the both of you, and maybe some alone time can teach him to stand on his own two feet, if your always around, he can learn to lean on and depend on you for everything. Its not totally bad. Your doing what you have to.”
Nikki grinned at the thought of a dance club, she loved to dance, it was a great way to wind down after a long day. Alek claimed to be a bad dancer. A lot of guys said that, it seemed to be some kind of guy code to get out of dancing. “it's easy, its all about the beat.” Nikki was a good dancer, it was something she wanted to do when she was little, be a back up dancer, before the days of wanting to marry a high profile gangster. She missed those days, the family was different, she couldn't explain how, but something definitely changed when she found out about what her dad did. Either way, she wouldn't let that ruin tonight, she was going to have a great time even if she had to stab someone with her heel to do it. Nikki stood up and adjusted her mini-dress, she hoped Alek had a car, or her feet would most likely be bleeding by the time they got anywhere.

Maybe she was right that the rushes were the same. To him, it made a difference. The reason for the rush was important. He enjoyed the rush when he was able to. It was always there with his job and he enjoyed his job very much. “I don’t know then, maybe they are the same.” it was best to agree with her. Maybe she was right and the rushes were the same even though he believed them to be different based on their reasons and predicaments.
He listened to her story about her old friend and couldn’t help but laugh out loud at what happened. “I’m not laughing at you, it’s just, why would she do that? Invite you to lunch and then tell you she was sleeping with your boyfriend? Don’t people usually keep that a secret?” he laughed again, hoping that she wouldn’t be offended by his laughing. Most people who cheated on someone want to keep it a secret for obvious reasons. It was comical that this person wouldn’t and wanted to tell her good friend at the time.
He thought about what she said about rock climbing. “You could always try indoor rock climbing. Might not give as much of a thrill but you wouldn’t have to worry so much about freezing up since you’re indoors and not on a real rock or mountain. If that would help.” Alek had been to an indoor rock climbing facility before. It had been something fun to do and it was relaxing since you could take your time doing it.
He watched as she ran her fingers through her hair, thinking briefly on toilets. “But if you’re a sheep then you won’t do anything thrilling that could give you a rush since you’d just be following the crowd.” he had a point. Most sheep didn’t do anything stupid or thrilling. They were too scared to do things that were different and followed the other people who are too scared. If she wanted to do anything on her list, she would have to stop being a sheep, even if for only that moment.
Nikki had a point. If Alek were always around then Nikolai wouldn’t learn to take care of himself. Not that that was a bad thing. It was good that he was learning how to live on his own. Once he gets old enough to leave the house, he’d be alone all the time unless he was out with people. And she was right about financially supporting Nikolai, there was no way he would be able to support both of them forever without working. Even if he did have a large inheritance in the bank that he could live off of, it wouldn’t last forever. “I guess you’re right. It’s good that he’s learning to stand on his own.”.
He smiled sheepishly. “I can tango, I can do technical dancing, but when it comes to free style dancing, I freeze, beat or no beat.” he stood up and walked over to the bar, paying for his drinks before returning to their table. Would she be okay dancing with someone who couldn’t dance?
